Blue Sandstone
The material commonly sold as Blue Sandstone in jewelry is more accurately known as Blue Goldstone or blue aventurine glass. Despite its name, it is not naturally occurring sandstone. It is a decorative man-made glass containing tiny reflective particles that create its characteristic sparkling appearance.
Goldstone has a history connected with Venetian glassmaking, with its production traditionally associated with the Murano glassmaking tradition dating back to the 17th century. The tiny metallic particles within the glass create the beautiful aventurescent sparkle that makes blue goldstone resemble a star-filled night sky.
Howlite
Howlite has a particularly interesting Canadian history. The mineral was first identified in 1868 near Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada, by Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist Henry How. The mineral was initially described as silicoborocalcite before being named Howlite in his honor by American geologist James Dwight Dana.
Natural Howlite is typically white or cream-colored with distinctive grey or black veining. It occurs primarily in borate and evaporite deposits, and notable deposits have been found in Nova Scotia and California, among other locations.
